Ajmer is a blend of Sufi culture and Hindu religion. Ajmer has always been a coveted and strategic place for the Rajputs, the Mughals and the Marathas. Ajmer was the seat of administration for the Chauhans till Prithviraj was defeated in 1193 AD by Mohammad Ghauri. It then became a part of the Delhi Sultanate.

However, Rana Kumbha of Mewar and Raja Maldeo again established Rajput rule over Ajmer. The annual Urs at Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is held on a grand scale and attracts pilgrims from all over the world irrespective of their caste and religion.

PRIME ATTRACTION

TEMPLES
Ajmer-e-Sharief Dargah - At the foot of a barren hill, is situated India s most important pilgrimage center for people from all faiths. It is the splendid tomb of the Sufi saint Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti more popularly known as Khawaja Saheb or Khawaja Sharif. The shrine is next only to Mecca or Median for the Muslims of South Asia. Emperor Akbar used to make a pilgrimage to this Dargah from Agra once a year.
Adhai-Din-Ka Jhonpara - One of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture, this mosque was a Sanskrit college in the 12th century. In 1193 AD Mohammad Ghori destroyed the college and a mosque was built in its place. The mosque is built on pillars and surprisingly no two pillars are alike. The archways are finely engraved with Kufi and Jughra inscriptions from the Holy Quran (also spelt as Koran).

Nasiyan (Jain Temple) - This red coloured Jain temple was built in the late 19th century. The wooden gilt in the double storeyed hall depicts scenes from the Jain mythology. The beauty of this temple is widely acclaimed.
MUSEUMS
Govt. Museum - The Royal palace of Akbar was converted into a museum and today it houses a rich collection of Mughal and Rajput armoury. Some of the fine and delicate sculptures of the region have been displayed here. The building itself has been constructed of red sandstone, which have been laid down in a square pattern giving it a fabulous look.
LAKES
Ana Sagar Lake - This lake was built by Anaji during 1135-1150 AD. Later the Mughal Emperors made additional constructions to beautify the lake. The 'Baradari', a marble pavilion was built by Shah Jahan and the Daulat Bagh Gardens were laid by Jehangir. This lake is located towards the north of Ajmer city.

FORTS

Taragarh Fort - Built in the 7th century by Ajaipal Chauhan, the fort gives a bird's eye view of the city. Taragarh Fort or the 'Star fort' is situated on a hill and to reach there, one has to take winding bridle path.
OTHERS

Mayo College - One of the India's best public schools, located in the south-east of the Ana Sagar, has now been converted to the Circuit House. The lake and the cenotaph and the shrine of the Hindu reformer Swami Dayanand, founder of the "Arya Samaj Movement" in India, can be viewed from here.

EXCURSIONS

CITIES
Pushkar - The sister city of Ajmer, Pushkar is just 11-km away from the city. The road to Pushkar passes through the Nag Pahar or the Snake Mountain.

Pushkar is an ancient city and has seen history being made since the Ramayana period. The account of this city can be found in the 4th century writings of the Chinese traveller-- Fa-Hien and also in the scripts written during the era of Muslim invasions. The city is considered by Hindus to be one of the most sacred places in India and has, perhaps, the only existing temple in Asia, dedicated to Lord Brahma. Life in the city is very much related to the Pushkar Lake. Mythology says that this ancient lake was formed when a lotus flower fell in the valley, from the hands Brahma.

The 52 bathing ghats that surround the lake are believed to have special powers e.g. 'Naga Kund' for fertility, 'Roop Tirth' for beauty and 'Kapil Vyapi Kund' for curing Leprosy.

The famous Pushkar fair is held every year on the Kartik Purnima day. This fair is famous as a bazaar for the animals particularly the camels. But the folk dancers and the folk musicians add traditional colour in the fair, which gives a new leash of life to the town.

Mangliyawas - This town is famous for two 800 years old trees of a rare species- ADANSONIA DIGITATA LINN- popularly known as 'Kalpa-Vriksha'. People visit this place through out the year but on dark moon day of 'Sravana' (also spelt as Shravana) thousands of people come to worship the trees. The town is 26-km from Ajmer.

Beawar - This town is located 54-km from Ajmer and is famous for the Badshahi procession festival held on the next day of Holi. On this occasion, people participate in large numbers and throw 'Gulal' on each other.
LAKES
Foy Sagar - This artificial lake was built during a famine relief programme. Named after the engineer responsible for its construction, the picturesque lake is 5-km from Ajmer.

Kishan Garh : On the road to Jaipur, 27-km from Ajmer is located this medieval treasure house of art. This place had one of the finest schools for miniature paintings during 18th century. This town of artists is also famous for Gundelao Lake, Phool Mahal Palace, Temple of Sri Kalyan Raiji and the Majhala Palace.

Hvar boasts of being the sunniest Dalmatian island. The scents of rosemary and lavender, a wooded shore and an exceptional cultural richness reveal why Hvar is a favourite tourist destination among the tourists from all over the world. Beaches are rocky, together with small bays with sandy beaches. The island of Hvar is the island of sunshine, lavender and wine, proud of its tradition of 130 years of organized tourism.
Located in the center of the Mediterranean, off of its northern more indented and more densely populated coast, the island of Hvar is also situated in the center of practically all of the routes that cross the eastern Adriatic. An outstanding geographical point of central Dalmatia, on the route from Zadar and Sibenik to Korcula and Dubrovnik, Hvar is located in the vicinity of, and within the region gravitating towards, the city of Split. However, Hvar is separated from the Split Channel by the island of Brac.
Hvar is listed in ten most beautiful islands in the world. Its natural landscapes are probably the most magnificent and impressive image of the island. The azure sea generously revealing the treasuers of the Neptune's underwater gardens, opiate fragrances of rosemary, heather and garden-sage or the song of cicadae at noon, these are the impressions that remain longest in our experience of Hvar.
The highlight of this lovely island is the ravishing little harbour town of Hvar, situated on the south-western coast of it. It lies in the cove protected by the Pakleni Islands in the south and a low crest in the north. The town of Hvar is the largest settlement on the island of Hvar. It is the town of a unique cultural and historical heritage but also an important tourist resort with a centuries-old tradition in tourism. There are beautifully preserved public buildings, cafes and shops around a square at the head of which is a church, which looks back down the square to the sea.
Just 3 miles from the town of Hvar there is ACI MARINA - Palmizana which is very important for nautical tourism and for discovering wild and untouched beauties of islands.

15 YEARS OF JAZZ
The St. Lucia Jazz Festival extends its beat all over the island. The event attracts visitors from all over the world and has given an unexpected boost to the local music industry.

Over the last 15 years, over 350 artistes and 3000 accompanying musicians have played at St. Lucia Jazz. What started as a weekend festival has turned into a ten day event. In 1992 there were only three venues in Castries, today the festival covers the island and requires the construction of fifteen different stages.

Only one forty foot container with three tons of equipment was needed to stage Jazz in 1992. Today it takes 32 tons of sound, lighting, trussing, rigging, generators and musical equipment to produce the festival. “For a small island to develop a product with such international acclaim says a lot for St. Lucia,” says Hilary Modeste, director of Tourism.
The economic benefits to the island are impressive. During Jazz 2005 over EC$46 million were injected into the local economy.
Then there are the Jazz faithful. More than one hundred individuals have attended every single event. These honorary jazz patrons come from Los Angeles, Martinique, Bermuda, Bahamas, Jamaica and Trinidad.
More and more St. Lucians are listening to jazz music.
“These days I turn on the jazz channel and I listen to the music,” says Sherril, an administrative assistant at a local enterprise. “I never used to
listen to jazz but because of the festival, I have learned to appreciate the music.”
Tommy, a travel agent in Castries says: “I like jazz music now. I never used to listen to it before. I always take in the free concerts during Jazz.”
The festival has also benefited the local music industry. Since its inception, local artistes have been given prominence. This opportunity has helped develop the careers of several St. Lucian musicians.
Boo Hinkson is St. Lucia’s premier guitarist. He performed at the first festival in 1992 with Luther Francois, a St. Lucian saxophonist based in Martinique. Since then he has played at every event as a solo artiste.
In 1996, he opened for George Benson. This encounter changed his approach to music. His playing, practice and performance were transformed as a result of this meeting. George Benson became a personal friend.
At another festival, Boo Hinkson and Stanley Jordan played together as an opening act for Herbie Hancock. The two guitarists had met previously in Martinique. Their St. Lucian encounter was a sell-out. Since then, they get together every year in St. Lucia where, along with saxophonist Ronnie Laws, they play at a private, invitation-only gig.
Ronnie Laws also booked Boo Hinkson and his band to play with him at the exclusive Anguilla festival. “We would never have met Ronnie Laws if it were not for St. Lucia Jazz,” said Boo Hinkson.
As a result of the exposure afforded by the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, Boo Hinkson is booked to play at several other music festivals in the Caribbean.
BET, a major sponsor of St. Lucia Jazz shot a half hour special on the St. Lucian guitarist. Such international television airplay has done wonders for his career and his music can be heard on American radio stations.
“It’s great to drive in Washington and hear my music on WHUR and in Atlanta on WCLK,” says Boo Hinkson.
He now performs regularly in New Orleans, Atlanta and Washington.
Says Hinkson: “At St. Lucia Jazz, you see the best in the world: singers, instrumentalists and concert production. And if they put all this in your backyard and you do not take advantage of it, then there is something wrong with you!” Naturally, Boo Hinkson performs at St. Lucia Jazz 2006.

The Ethical Travel Guide

The Ethical Travel Guide is much more than an innovative and stimulating guide to some of the most exciting holiday experiences around. It is key tool in Tourism Concerns fight to ensure that local people always benefit from tourism.

Thousands of grass roots, low impact, high sustainability initiatives all over the world struggle to tell tourists they exist. Very few of these inspirational initiatives have the resources or skills to market themselves within an industry dominated by multinational companies. The Ethical Travel Guide is a challenge to the stranglehold that western based companies from the wealthier nations have over the distribution networks of the tourism industry.

It is a chance for struggling communities and dedicated local entrepreneurs to talk to their customers, to promote a more authentic and local experience which they are uniquely able to provide. And the market is lapping it up. The book went to reprint within a month of publication and has already been translated in to Dutch and Italian.

The Ethical Travel Guide lists 300 places in over 60 countries, many of which will not be found in conventional guidebooks. Entries include places to stay, organisations, trips, tours and projects, from canoeing the backwaters of the Amazon to luxury breaks in the Indian Ocean. You can stay in very simple, local style accommodation or more sophisticated hotels with western plumbing. But they all have one thing in common. They all support the local economy, bringing much needed wealth to communities. It is a tribute to enterprising people all over the world and a fulfilment of Tourism Concern’s commitment to ensure that people in all destinations benefit from tourism.

This unique and ground breaking marketing tool has a hard hitting introduction by Polly Patullo, journalist and travel writer, highlighting many of the issues, such as displacement of local people, poverty, cultural erosion and environmental degradation that most tourists are unaware of. So while it provides holiday makers with fantastic ideas for authentic and guilt free holidays, it also raises awareness of the impacts of tourism with a public that is starting to pay attention to their impacts on the world.
